Unlike the anomalies of last year’s weather there is a sense of normality as we approach autumn. Lettuce, carrots, onions and potatoes which all suffered last year are all forecasted with good yields.
FRUIT
Berries are excellent – raspberries, blueberries and locally sourced strawberries are of top quality. English apples and plums will be available along with a short damson season. Peaches and nectarines continue to be wonderful but the season will start to dwindle towards the end of the month. Melons including honeydew, water, galia and cantaloupe are of top quality along with wonderful red and green grapes.
VEGETABLES
As autumn nears we think of brassicas, root vegetables, squashes and locally sourced green and red kales. Lovely cavelo nero and courgettes will grace the dining table. Cabbages continue to increase in size and quality as the temperatures drop – savoys and spring cabbage particularly. Cauliflower and calabrese which have suffered both in quantity and price recently have started to level out back to normal. Spanish onions are improving all the time with their set skins, together with improving shallot prices. Sweet potatoes, butternut squash, mixed squashes, marrows etc will to be of top quality at reasonable prices. Potatoes have now switched to main crop varieties, with forecasts showing good yields which will reflect prices.
SALAD
Speciality lettuce remain of top quality and size from our shores. Iceberg and salad bags – crispy, leafy and baby leaf continue to be good. As the Dutch and English season nears to an end, tomato and cucumber prices may become vulnerable before the Spanish crops takeover. At the moment varieties of tomatoes remain stable but are of good quality. Beetroots remain excellent – golden, candied and red are all sourced locally. Capsicums have all taken a price hike recently and continue to rise – please be aware.
